New Linux Gaming Console [Post Update 2]

by Jake W on Jul.09, 2010, under Caanoo, Gnu/Linux

For all you guys and girls who like hacking and open source this is a treat for you, time to geekgasm.

The GP2X Caanoo
http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-ioy0-71-d1-49-en-84-j-70-3w5n.html
This is the new open source linux console called the Caanoo and it is more than twice as fast  as the PSP and is roughly the same size (screen is a bit smaller).  Gamepark Holdings designed this for hackers and the open source community You can do anything with it OMG DREWL.  Being nearly 3 times faster than the PSP some one could surely emulate PSP games on it. Ok lets Compare it to the PSP

PSP vs Caanoo Specs

Hardware PSP Gp2X Caanoo
CPU 333MHZ 533MHZ (Overclock 800MHZ)
Ram 32MB 128MB
TouchScreen NO YES
Microphone NO YES
3d Acceleration YES YES
Firmware/Software Proprietary Linux/GPL Open-Source
Wireless 802.11 802.11
USB 2.0 2.0
SD Slot Only some Brands YES, all brands
Vibration NO YES
Motion Control NO YES
Flash Memory None None

This proves the “GP2X Caanoo” is better than “Sony PSP” in every way. Even Gameparks previous handheld console the “GP2X WIZ” is better than the PSP. Here is a link to where you can purchase the caanoo, being cheaper and faster than the PSP why would people even buy a PSP? Order GP2X Caanoo Game System (black/blue) at Play-Asia.com It only costs $150US  ($200NZ) ($160AUS)

[Update 1] I found a picture to compare the GP2X Caanoo to Gameparks Holdings previous console the GP2X WIZ and as you can see the Caanoo is so much better. A big improvement in screen size and quality and also notice the analog joystick.

Caanoo Vs WIZ

Also the Caanoo is really solid compared to the WIZ

Gamepark Holdings has being buying the rights to some old classic arcade games so far they have bought the following

Batsgun ,Demons World, Fire Shark, Grind Stormer, Hell Fire, Out Zone, Pipi & Bibi’s, Snow Bros 1, Snow Bros 2, Tiger Heli, Truxton 1, Truxton 2, Twin Cobra and more

Gamepark Holdings is changing the way that a lot of these games are played for example imagine playing Out Run with Motion Control. The Caanoo is open-source so there will be emulators for all retro consoles.

Many commercial games are coming to the caanoo some of these include

Rythmos (Rhythm Game), Propis (Puzzle Game), Perfect Goal Manager 2010 (football manager Clone), Deicide 3 (action), Redemtion Lair (RPG) and more

The Caanoo will have many more games coming, some of them are online or network games making use of the Wifi Dongle. (Wifi dongle sold separately)

I am hoping some one will port the Mugen engine to it I will need a 4gb SD card to fit all my characters on it :) I have already already got mine from here,

[UPDATE 2] As part of GP32Spain second coding contest for Gamepark Holdings previous console the Gp2x WIZ some one has almost perfected a existing playstation emulator.

PCSX4ALL v1.0 has not being released to the public yet but a lot of games work almost perfectly through this emulator, this emulator just needs t be ported to the Caanoo when it is released.  Check out the emu here

Gamepark Holdings might be coming to Auckland in New Zealand for the Armageddon Pulp Expo in October, I would love to see a gamepark holding booth there next to all the big company’s booths they will look great gameparks holdings product is something new and exciting and with over 30000 people passing through the doors it would be a great opportunity for a small company with only 70 staff members. Maybe they will throw a party too, YAY! Buy a Caanoo

PREY – Track down your Stolen Laptop

by Jake W on Jul.08, 2010, under Gnu/Linux

Ever had your laptop stolen? Thief’s are always on the look out to snatch a laptop. once me and my friend were at a arcade and luckily we both were using our laptops at the time a passing by thief stole my friends laptop bag probably thinking a laptop was inside.

There is lightweight software for modern laptops to catch these theifs, one of which is called Prey http://preyproject.com/ which works on Mac, windows and Linux and its free and open-source.

A lot of thief’s will try to steal information off your laptop before they reformat and sell it. Prey can use your webcam to take a picture of the criminal and will e-mail a server that you can log into a photo of them to give to the police. It can also use a laptops GPS to find where they are and can send all sorts of other information to the server, like a screenshot and what programs they are running.

This program will give you peace of mind if your laptop gets stolen :)

Google WarDrive the whole world

by Jake W on Jun.10, 2010, under About Me, Gnu/Linux

Google has admitted to wardriving while doing google street view.

For those of you non-computer literate folks wardriving is when a group hackers travel in a vehicle usually a van searching for wireless networks. They use a GPS device and wireless card and create a map that shows all the networks and their radius, its really cool.

Google are legends, they pretty much wardrived the whole world,  I remember something claiming to be google popping up on my network many years back and now i know what it was.

There is nothing wrong with wardriving so I think  people should settle down, none of your data or personal infomation is taken wardrivers. Wardrivers/hackers/geeks love stats and infomation. All they do is droll  over a road map that has circles on it.

There are always going to be what hackers like to call crackers who will try to steal your information and harm your computer but if the media keeps pissing off the hackers who try to stop it and protect computer users they need to get their facts right.

Updated To Ubuntu 9.04

by Jake W on Jun.02, 2009, under Gnu/Linux

So 3 or so weeks ago I opened up my laptop and tried to install some software via “sudo apt-get install” only to find the ubuntu 7.10 repositories were no longer available.

Ubuntu 7.10 was great, it ran better than the others on my laptop so I was a little disappointed.

Any way, I had no choice really but to upgrade to 9.04 and I am glad I did, 9.04 can be compared to current proprietary operating systems.

Ubuntu 9.04 boot time is amazing, so much faster than previous releases of ubuntu

Once again ubuntu outdoes windows and not just from a freedom stand point.

I highly Recommend ubuntu 9.04 for your operating system.

I use ubuntu as my main os on my main desktop PC but unfortunately a bad jumper craped out my linux hard drive (I had dual boot linux/window, each os had its own HD to avoid partitions and gove me more space) and only leaving me with the hard drive that windows is on hence being using windows for the past few months eeewww, cant wait to replace linux HD so I can start using ubuntu 9.04 as my main OS

by Jake W on Apr.02, 2009, under Gnu/Linux

So last year Richard Stallman came to NZ and I went to Auckland University to see him.
Richard Stallman started the free software movement (free as in Freedom not free beer) and with out him no open source movement and no linux as he inspired it and also wrote the GPL that the software is under

The Reason for this post is not for a article about free software or RMS, its reason is to share some media of when he was in NZ  so enjoy

This is a video of him speaking at Auckland Uni

This is a Interview he did with Radio New Zealand in 2008
